Is God a Patriot?

Well I've been sitting around trying to figure out what I'm going to do next with this bit of internet real estate when I received an email from Jay and Stephanie Gromek. It was an op-ed published by the New York Times and written by Charles Marsh, titled "Wayward Christian Soldiers" . Marsh briefly discusses the increased political power held by Christians (especially on the conservative side) and in his opinion, at least based on the war effort, how presumptuous some of those in the Christian elite have become in regard to God's will.

To what degree can we truly tell what God's will is today? How aligned are the wills of God, George Bush and America at large? Is the presumption that we are aligned with God or vice versa? Is the right-wing Christian interest in the war truly based on the idea that "American foreign policy and military might have opened an opportunity for the Gospel in the land of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob" as stated by Charles Stanely? Is the war on terror in part a crusade to spread the ideals of Christianity?

Does Christianity have a place in politics and Government? If so how do we keep true to the roots of Christiandom and not be white-washed by political and personal agendas?

Thanks again to Stephanie and Jay Gromek for an interesting topic point.

Homosexuality and Christ

I debated whether or not to broach this subject right away or sit it on the back burner and delve into lighter fare to begin our discussion group. It is a huge issue for so many people, the conservative Christian who sees only the abomination of the act; the liberal Christian who believes there is room in God's house for everyone and everything; and the homosexual Christians (lets not pretend people, they do exist) trying to find their way between who they are and what they are expected to be.

We now have gay and lesbian churches and churches that practice their own brand of McCarthyism where
potentially homosexual members are outted regardless of any facts. This issue has polarized the world as well as Christians, with those who are unsure, in the middle of a tug of war.

As someone with a gay brother and several close gay friends, do I have to resign myself to knowing that they are doomed to hell? If a homosexual is a saved and practicing believer, is there still little hope for them in the afterlife? How much of man's biases has been intermingled with the will of God? If homosexuality is genetically predisposed, can a physical or mental "condition" be truly counted as sin?

In the end I'm trying to figure out if this is the next civil rights movement? Christ and the bible has been used many times in the past to explain why Africans, Native Americans, Women, and any other "minority" throughout history was weaker, more evil, and in greater need of salvation by the dominating "enlightened" class.

Is the bible once again a tool of the oppressor or the beacon of the unenlightened?

Once again this forum was designed with the intent to give people a platform to exchange ideas freely. Due to the sensitive topic introduced no posting of a derogatory nature will not be tolerated.
